How does Patient Access work?

Your practice uses a clinical information system to manage patient records. Each time you have a consultation with a clinician or test results are sent back from the lab, the details are recorded to build up your medical history and help with your future care. The practice also uses the system to book appointments, send letters and update your contact details. Patient Access is a website that displays information from the practice's system and allows you to:

  1. View and book available appointments.
  2. View your medication and request further prescriptions.
  3. Send messages to your practice.
  4. View your medical record.

Each practice decides how much information is allowed to be seen through Patient Access and how many appointments can be booked online, rather than over the telephone. If you'd like to see more of your information on Patient Access, speak to your practice and see if they have plans for this. The practice are also responsible for allowing you access to Patient Access and only they can create and reset accounts if you're struggling to sign in.

Patient Access is maintained by EMIS Health. We provide clinical information systems to practices, hospitals and pharmacies in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. On this website you'll be able to get in touch with us if you're having problems with using Patient Access. We'll certainly help you where we can, though sometimes you'll need to contact your practice with the query as they control your account and what you can do with it. If you do contact us, don't include any medical information, just the problem you're having with the website - we'll reply to your query quickly.

IMPORTANT: Tickets can only be raised for Medical practices in England. If your practice is outside England, please raise your query directly with your Medical practice.

If you still need help with using Patient Access, you can raise a ticket here for the support team. If you want to discuss a medical issue, contact your practice.

Patient Access is an online service provided by EMIS Health. We provide the clinical system that your practice uses and which you connect to through Patient Access. Your Patient Access account is configured and looked after by your practice, not us, so you will sometimes need to contact them directly if you’re having problems. However, where we can help you or your practice we certainly will.
